Back to School Information
August 6, 2008
Greetings Students and Families!!
It’s almost here…that exciting time of the year when the new school year begins. My favorite commercial is the Staples one when the dad is buzzing around on the shopping cart with a look of glee on his face while shopping for school supplies and his children are gloomily walking behind him with the Christmas music “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” playing in the background. ☺
Mr. Farmer, Mrs. Gaukel, Mrs. Leyba, Mrs. Accardo, Mrs. Doherty, Mrs. Gillette, and I have been busy getting your school ready for August 25! You might recognize some new names there. As you know, our beloved Mrs. Madruga retired. Mrs. Leyba was hired to take over her responsibilities. Our new office assistant and health care helper is Mrs. Accardo.
When you come to school, you will notice the office has been “redone.” We did this in an effort to integrate Mrs. Doherty and Mrs. Gillette into the main office area. Mr. Farmer worked to turn the space across from the office into a classroom. Mr. Menardi, Mr. Pacheco, and Mrs. Pestotnik will co-share this space for math, religion, and geography classes.
The uniform policy remains unchanged from last year. We request that parents review this with each child. Copies can be obtained in this office or you can view the policy on our web page www.stanthonytri-parishschool.net Since this is our second year with the revisions, we will be stricter about enforcement. After school detentions (service work) will likely be the avenue of discipline for violations.
In lieu of the traditional “Back to School Night, Open House” we will host grade level cluster meetings. We feel we can serve you better in this capacity by allowing you an opportunity to learn about/review school and classroom procedures and policies. These meetings will be held in late August or early September. Look on our website for dates and times.
We are in the process of updating our website. Hopefully, it will be completed and launched by the time school starts. Please refer to it often as important reminders are put on it along with school menus, classroom updates, and posted meetings to name a few. It is our best tool of communication with you. Also, we make every attempt to get information to you through e-mail. It is important that you update us when your preferred e-mail address changes. Keeping track of over 100 families can be a great challenge for our office.
Join us for a prayer service on Monday, August 25, on the playground. This will be a great kick off to the new year. Mass will be Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. at the church. Please note this is a time change. Mass shirts are required.
Our school is blessed to have the support of all three churches. Our three pastors work well to help our projects advance. The tri-parish spirit is working well in our city, as well. Watch for events in the church bulletins as they occur, that support tri-parish activities.
We are very excited to have Father Kevin step in as one of our weekly religious education teachers along with Father August. They will teach the children every Thursday. Father Kevin will also be teaching our middle school students in the near future.
We are hoping to move forward with our building project. Plans have been drawn based on recommendations from staff, students, community, and parish groups. We have been very encouraged by the support we have received so far. Our next steps are to complete a financial feasibility study to determine the level of financial support we can hope to receive. After that, the St. Anthony Tri-Parish Catholic School Board of Trustees will make the final decision as to what we do next. This is a big project and our school community needs a lot of prayers from everyone. Please stop by the office and view the plans of the dream catholic school in the state of Wyoming.
We are looking for parents interested in substitute teaching this school year. We have been so blessed to have wonderful parents helping us out when we have been in need. If you have substituted for us in the past or would like to be added to the list, please let the office know and they will get necessary information from you. All substitutes will be require to do a background check and take the Safe Environment Training class (approx. 2 hour commitment.) We pay $65.00 per day or you may exchange your time for PIP hours.
Mr. Farmer has scheduled playground clean up day for August 16, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Please join us (both students and families) in helping us get our playground ready for the start of school. This is a great way for middle school students to get a jump start on service hours required for school, parents to earn PIP hours, and help make our school beautiful for the fall.
Also, on Saturday, August 16 Natrona County School District, along with Mercer House is sponsoring a Back to School Bash for all students in the county. St. Anthony Tri-Parish Catholic School will have a booth from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 at the Nic. Stop by our booth and learn a little something about UV Rays!!
UNIFORM SWAP…Please bring your old, out grown and “gently used “uniforms to school on August 12 for a swap to take place on August 13 and 14 in the school gym. Please bring only uniforms that are ready to wear for another child. If they are torn or have stains, please do not bring them. There will be no charge for these uniforms. Any left over uniforms by the end of the day will be donated to St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store. Thank you.
We will take your old black, navy blue, or brown belts to “rent” to students who have forgotten theirs for that day. If you have any that you would like to donate, please give them to the office.
Beginning this fall, our Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade will begin a new math program, Everyday Math. This program is considered a rigorous program that teaches children to think using a variety of problem solving techniques. The National Science Foundation touts Everyday Mathematics as one of three rigorous programs after researching a variety of programs. Our staff has researched this program and another recommended by the National Science Foundation and feel this program will help us teach our students to be higher level thinkers and build a strong foundation to be able to be successful in higher level math. Currently, Sheridan School District is implementing Everyday Mathematics in their elementary schools and has been for the past several years. They have the highest math scores in the state with over 90% of their students scoring at proficient or advanced quadrants. Teachers will be trained using this program on Monday, August 11 at Verda James School along with teachers from Verda James and Poison Spider. Parents are welcome to view the materials before the start of school.
For those students signed up for the Washington D.C./Colonial Williamsburg trip, I have been informed that our departure fees will be raised $98 per traveler. This is no surprise considering the cost of fuel. For those not signed up (students in current grades 5-8) but interested in participating, we have only 15 available spots left. Parents are welcome to participate. If you sign up before September 30, participants will be charged last year’s rate, After September new rates will be charged. We will hold an informational meeting on Wednesday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the library. For more information, call me at school.
On behalf of our dedicated staff, thank you for all you do to support our wonderful school. With your help we will have an excellent year. You are always in our prayers and we thank you for choosing St. Anthony Tri-Parish Catholic School for your child. God bless you and your family. We look forward to seeing you on August 25.
Please note…the mass time has been changed for this year, from Tuesdays at 8:45 a.m. to Tuesdays 10:15 a.m.
